UK – Catering Firm Fined £20

A catering company has been fined £20,111 after, allegedly, hundreds of wedding guests were struck with food poisoning from eating contaminated rice.

Ealing Council’s food safety team were first alerted by the father of the bride on September 24, 2013, who contacted them claiming that 90% of the 470 wedding guests were suffering with food poisoning.

However, the prosecution could only be based on the 93 guests who formally reported their symptoms of food poisoning to investigators.

The incident comes after four Ealing borough food sellers, including Pizza Hut in Southall, were closed down by food safety inspectors.

Greenford catering company, the Royal Club, was given a £20,111 penalty by Ealing Magistrates Court on Tuesday November 25. The company’s sole director, Mr Biku Thapa, was ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work and is banned from being a director of any company for five years.

Henry’s Farm of Virginia is recalling all packages of Soybean Sprouts because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. This is the second big recall of sprouts for Listeria contamination for this facility; the other was in 2012. No illnesses have been reported to date, but listeriosis can take up to 70 days to present after exposure.

A recent outbreak in Durand, Wisconsin is the latest example of a Campylobacter outbreak linked to raw milk. It’s a common pairing.

The South Dakota Department of Health tracked Campylobacter cases from January 2012 to August 30, 2014. Of the 791 total cases of campylobacteriosis reported during that period, 42 were associated with raw milk, or about 5 percent.

Most of those affected, 23 of the 42 cases , were children 19 and under. Ten case patients were 5 and under.

E. coli in Ranchers Legacy Meat has prompted a 1,200-pound recall. All products produced by the Vadnais Heights, Minn. company on Nov. 19, 2014 are subject to recall.

The recalled products were packaged in plastic cryovac sealed packets in various weights and distributed nationwide. The recalled products have a Package Code or Use By date of 12/10/2014 and bear the establishment number “Est. 40264” inside the USDA mark of inspection. A list of stores that received the product is not yet available.

Although Salmonella in bean sprouts produced by Wonton Foods has sickened 63 people in 10 states, a recall for the tainted product has not been issued. The company told federal officials that its last shipment of the product was November 18 and that it had contacted Asian restaurants and other establishments on the East Coast that received the product. But it did not issues a recall. Nor has it made public a list of companies that served or sold the sprouts.

USA – Salmonella at a Church Conference ?

Salmonella may have sickened as many as 50 people who attended a church conference at Living Word Tabernacle Church in Bessemer City, NC, according to the Gaston County Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS). Seven people have confirmed cases of salmonellosis and tests results are pending on others who attended the conference October 1-5.

Chicken marsala tainted with C. perfringens was the likely source of a food poisoning outbreak that sickened 216 people who attended the April Food Safety Summit in Baltimore, Maryland health officials have concluded. C. perfringens is a common source of food poisoning, sickening an estimated 1 million Americans each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Outbreaks often happen at schools, banquet centers and catered events.

More than half of those who were sickened developed symptoms, which include diarrhea and abdominal cramps, within 16 hours of of exposure. For most of them, illness lasted about 28 hours, which is typical for C. perfringens poisoning.

India – Lizard in Food: 350 School Children Hospitalised

Around 350 children of a government-run Urdu Primary School here were hospitalised on Friday for suspected food poisoning after partaking mid-day meal.

The children with complaints of head ache, stomach ache and vomitting were taken to Dr Ambedkar Medical College Hospital with anxious parents swarming the premises, making it tough for police to control them.

Speaking to reporters, Health Minister U T Khader, who visited the hospital, said “around 350 students have fallen ill and have been admitted to Ambedkar Hospital. Most of them have returned home after getting the treatment.”

The children were brought to the hospital at around 3.30 pm with complaints of vomiting sensation, Anjaneya, Manager, Ananda Social and Educational Trust which runs the hospital, said.

He said doctors were told that a lizard was found in the food served to the children.

A school teacher said she found a lizard in the food soon after which they stopped serving it.

 

USA – Dried Fish Recall – Clostridium botulinum Toxin

S&S FOod Import is recalling Uneviscerated Dried Roach (Vobla), a dried fish, because it was not properly eviscerated and may pose a risk of botulism toxin. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the consumption of this product.

The recalled product is Uneviscerated Dried Roach (Vobla) with Best Before date of 06.05.2015. The product was sold nationwide in 5 kilogram boxes. It was sampled by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets and found to be improperly processed. The sale of uneviscerated processed fish is prohibited under state regulations.

USA – Cryptosporidum Outbreak – Florida

According to WTSP, the Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County is reporting an increase in cryptosporidium cases since July 1, 2014. Public health officials say that 157 cases have been reported by DOH-Hillsborough in the last two months. Last year, there were only 11 cases during the same time period.

Many of those sickened spent time at day care or schools during the incubation period. Most of those sickened are under the age of 15.

Cryptosporidium is a parasite that is passed through infected feces. It is spread after improper hand washing after using the bathroom or changing diapers. It spreads easily in chlorinated swimming pools and through hand-to-mouth contact.
