Canada – More Products Recalled – Chia Seed – Salmonella

In Canada, Dietary Express is recalling sprouted chia & flax seed powder from the marketplace because it may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. No illnesses have been reported related directly to this specific product, but there is a Salmonella outbreak in Canada and the United States linked to chia seed and sprouted chia seed products.

The recalled product is Dietary Express Sprouted Chia & Flax in 454 gram packages. The size appears on the inner package only. There is no UPC number. All packages sold from September 26, 2013 to June 12, 2014 are included in this recall.

The food recall warning issued on June 7, 2014 has been updated to include additional product information. This additional information was identified during the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s (CFIA) food safety investigation.

Advantage Health Matters and Noorish Inc. are recalling various products containing chia seeds or sprouted chia seed powder from the marketplace due to possible Salmonella contamination. Consumers should not consume the recalled products described in this link.

The Public Health Agency of Canada has reported that two strains of Salmonella have been associated with an outbreak: Salmonella Newport and Salmonella Hartford. In total, 34 cases have been reported in British Columbia (6), Alberta (4), Ontario (22) and Quebec (2). Five cases have been hospitalized; four cases have been discharged and have recovered or are recovering. The status of one case was not provided to the Agency. No deaths have been reported. The investigation is ongoing but currently, 19 of 19 cases that have been interviewed have reported consumption of sprouted chia seeds or sprouted chia seed powder, and 16 of 19 cases specifically report sprouted chia seed powder.

The food recall warning issued on May 30, 2014 has been updated to include additional product information. This additional information was identified during the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s (CFIA) food safety investigation.

Industry is recalling various products containing sprouted chia seeds from the marketplace due to possible Salmonella contamination. Consumers should not consume the recalled products described below.

The following products have been sold in British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Quebec and through Internet sales.
