India -Hyderabad: Study finds bacteria E. coli in pani puri, fruit juices

Deccan Chronicle

It may be delicious, but the roadside snack, pani puri, contains a cocktail of bacteria and fungus, according to a recent study. Researchers of the Community Medicine Department of Gandhi Medical College have released a study titled A cross-sectional study on microbiological quality of street food in Hyderabad.

It is based on random samples of water and chutney from roadside pani puri sellers to test the microbiological quality. They found 45 per cent of the water and 70 per cent of the chutney samples were contaminated. All samples of freshly squeezed fruit juices, which are commonly believed to be healthier than junk food, were found to be contaminated.

Mark Selby and Thomasina Miers, the co-founders of Brit-Mex restaurant chain, Wahaca, write that last week a number of our staff and customers were struck down by what is suspected to be the winter vomiting bug, norovirus.

We assessed each case and when it became clear they were not isolated incidents, we got in touch with relevant officials at Public Health England and Environmental Health Offices. In tandem with that, we took our own precautionary measures – voluntarily closing affected restaurants, carrying out anti-viral deep cleaning at all of our restaurants, whether affected or not, and ensuring that any staff member who had reported illness remained off site until their symptoms had ceased for at least 48 hours.

Our amazing teams have worked tirelessly to ensure that we have done everything within our power to limit any risk to our customers and team members, and the situation remains under control and we continue to work with all local authorities to monitor this closely.

Czech Republic -Czech Republic: recall of 3 million eggs -Salmonella

Poultry Med EGGS

The Czech State Veterinary Administration ordered an immediate recall of approximately 2.67 million eggs from Poland which may have been sold at Tesco, Albert, and Kaufland supermarket chains due to the threat of salmonella. So far, hygiene officers in the Czech Republic have no specific information about salmonella cases linked to the Polish eggs.
Czech poultry farmers have been recording a sharp increase in demand for eggs, following a salmonella outbreak in Europe linked to eggs from Poland. However, Czech farmers are unable to meet the growing demand due to their own low production.
