UK – Mum with Serious Food Poisoning -Undercooked Chicken Wings

Nottingham Post

A mum-of-one is pursuing a claim for compensation after both she and her 83-year-old grandfather suffered serious food poisoning from eating undercooked chicken wings.

Emma Cross, 22, and her elderly grandfather experienced nausea, serious stomach cramps, sickness and diarrhoea within hours of eating pre-cooked Delamere chicken wings bought from Heron Foods in early July.

Their illness continued through the night and next day, with both unable to regain their appetite for a further two weeks.

The product has since been pulled from shelves at Home Bargains and Heron Foods nationally after other members of the public filed complaints.

Brown County salmonella cases blamed on peas from Green Bay farmers market

GREEN BAY – Brown County health officials are urging people to thoroughly wash fresh vegetables after four people in the county contracted salmonella poisoning from peas sold at a Green Bay farmers market.

One person was hospitalized and three others were sickened after eating peas purchased at the July 22 farmers market. People began reporting symptoms to the health department this past week, officials said.

County Health Officer Anna Destree said people should dispose of shelled or “loose” peas from any of the city’s Saturday farmers markets between July 19 and Aug. 5 to avoid the risk of salmonella poisoning. That includes peas that have been frozen, she said.

Mesa County Fair Linked to 8 with E. coli

At least eight people are sick with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli after spending time at the Mesa County Fair, which ran from July 25-29 in Grand Junction.

Mesa County Public Health officials have been working with representatives from the fair and those who became sick to find the source of the illness.

Shiga toxin-producing E. coli is common in cattle, sheep and goats. It can be contracted through direct contact with these animals or contact with things in close proximity to the animals that may have been cross contaminated.

Mesa County Public Health officials have also been in close communication with child-care providers and health-care providers to determine the magnitude of the outbreak, and to prevent further spread of the illness.

Cyclosporiasis in travellers returning to the United Kingdom from Mexico in summer 2017: lessons from the recent past to inform the future

During the summers of 2015 and 2016, the United Kingdom experienced large outbreaks of cyclosporiasis in travellers returning from Mexico. As the source of the outbreaks was not identified, there is the potential for a similar outbreak to occur in 2017; indeed 78 cases had already been reported as at 27 July 2017. Early communication and international collaboration is essential to provide a better understanding of the source and extent of this recurring situation.

Over the summers of 2015 and 2016, the United Kingdom (UK) reported outbreaks of the intestinal disease cyclosporiasis in travellers returning from Mexico, mainly from the Riviera Maya and Cancun regions [1,2]. As the source of the outbreaks was not identified, there is the potential for a similar outbreak to re-occur. As at 27 July, 78 cases had already been reported in the UK in 2017, of which 37 (47%) had travelled to Mexico, 20 were awaiting travel history, 14 had travelled to nine other overseas destinations and seven reported no overseas travel [3]. We describe and discuss actions taken in advance of an anticipated outbreak during the summer of 2017.
