UK – Haggis and black pudding recalled over botulism fears

Metro

A food company has been forced to recall some of its haggis and black pudding products after they were caught up in a ‘killer’ food poisoning scare. The Farmer’s Son, based at Clentrie Farm, Auchtertool, near Edinburgh, issued a recall for its Haggis Bungs, Haggis 4 Slice and Black Pudding 4 Slice products on Saturday.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) confirmed the decision was related to the toxin production of Clostridium botulinum, which could cause a serious form of food poisoning called botulism.

India – Following INFOSAN alert, FSSAI warns against sale of contaminated food

FNB News

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), the country’s apex food regulator, has issued an order warning businesses and consumers against the sale and consumption of contaminated food after it received an alert from the International Food Safety Authorities Network (INFOSAN) with regards to the contamination of infant milk formula with Salmonella Agona.

The formula has been manufactured by France’s Lactalis Group, and its symptoms include abdominal cramps, diarrhoea and fever.

According to INFOSAN, French authorities recently advised the withdrawal and recall of 12 batches of the implicated product. A few days later, the recall was expanded to over 600 batches that were manufactured between February and December 2017.

They identified 40 countries to whom the affected product was imported and were being informed about the Salmonella infection.

These include Afghanistan, Algeria, Andorra, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Cameroon, China, Congo, Cote D’Ivoire, Gabon, Georgia, Greece, Guinea, Haiti, Hong Kong SAR (China), Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Pakistan, Paraguay, Peru, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Seychelles, Spain, Sudan, Switzerland, Taiwan (China), Togo, the Netherlands, Turkey, Ukraine, the United Arab Emirates, Vietnam and Yemen.

As per the FSSAI notice, there was no report of any import of the contaminated infant formula product to India, yet there could be a possibility of this product reaching the consumers through online sales or by other means. Therefore, a notice has been issued to the public and various stakeholders, so that any inadvertent consumption of the infected products is avoided.

Research – EFSA – Mycotoxin Information

EFSA Mold Mould Mycotoxin kswfoodworld

Mycotoxins are toxic compounds produced by different types of fungus, belonging mainly to the Aspergillus, Penicillium and Fusarium genera. Under favourable environmental conditions, when temperature and moisture are conducive, these fungi proliferate and may produce mycotoxins. They commonly enter the food chain through contaminated food and feed crops, mainly cereals.

Research – Detection of Hepatitis E Virus RNA in Raw Cured Sausages and Raw Cured Sausages Containing Pig Liver at Retail Stores in Switzerland

Journal of Food Protection

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the causative agent of an acute and self-limiting hepatitis and is increasingly detected in food products containing pork. In this study, 102 raw sausages containing pig liver (mortadella di fegato) and 18 raw pork sausages (salami type sausage) collected at retail level in a region of southern Switzerland were screened for the presence of HEV by quantitative real-time reverse transcription PCR. HEV was detected in 12 (11.8%) of 102 mortadella di fegato products but not in any of the salami sausages. Viral loads in the mortadella di fegato sausages ranged from log HEV 2.3 to 5.7 genome copies per gram of food product. This study identifies mortadella di fegato type sausages made with raw pig liver as a potential source of HEV infection in humans.

USA – Inspector general report: FDA food recalls dangerously slow, procedures deeply flawed

USA Today

The federal recall process for about 80% of the nation’s food is so slow it can take up to 10 months to get unsafe products off all store shelves — even when people are getting sick, says a report released Tuesday by the Department of Health and Human Services’  inspector general office.

Much has changed since the recalls between 2012 and 2015 that were analyzed by the inspector general, says Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb.

“Delay is deeply concerning to me as well,” Gottlieb, a physician, said in an interview. “I think it’s working a lot better now.”
