During an examination, listeria was detected in one package.Possible consequences:

Listeria can cause flu-like symptoms with fever and diarrhea. Especially in pregnant women, small children and people with a weakened immune system, serious illnesses (“listeriosis”) can occur as a result of consumption. The “Graved salmon” variety of the article “Salmon specialities” with a use-by date of 14.07.2025 should therefore no longer be consumed as a precaution.

Company Announcement

Natureen International Inc. of Walnut, CA is recalling 244 bags of Wei-Chuan Dried Black Fungus Slice (2.5oz / bag), because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The recalled Wei-Chuan Dried Black Fungus Slice (2.5oz / bag) were distributed in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, and Wisconsin through direct delivery to retail stores and supermarkets from Wei-Chuan Chicago Branch.

The product comes in a 2.5 ounces / bag, clear plastic package marked with (lot # XJ17) at the bottom of the front package side and also with an expiration date of (EXP:20260417) below the lot # (labeled packaged bag with lot number and expiration date will be added with this recall notification).

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

The California Department of Public Health notified FDA that the product was contaminated with pathogen of Salmonella.

Production of the product has been suspended while FDA and the company continues their investigation of the source of the problem.

Consumers who have purchased 2.5-ounce packages of “Wei-Chuan Dried Black Fungus Slice” are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Symptoms caused by Listeria monocytogenes can be similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea. However, in rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications, such as meningitis.

Reason for Update 1: This update is to make consumers aware that the Salmonella found in this product has been linked to human illness after consumption of the product. The Salmonella found is resistant to several antibiotics, therefore particular disposal routes are required.
Reason for Update 2: This update is to make consumers aware of additional online platforms selling this product. The product is sold on Amazon and on the Orgenism website.

The presence of Salmonella in the products listed above. 

The Salmonella found produces extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL), and is resistant to several antibiotics, (fluoroquinolones, tetracycline and Fosfomycin), making it more difficult to treat. Inaccurate disposal of the product could cause wider public health, animal health or environmental risks therefore it is important to ensure you follow the advice on how to safely dispose of the product provided below.

Symptoms caused by Salmonella usually include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.

Public Health Authorities advise if you have consumed this product and have any concerns, you should seek advice from healthcare professionals, using the most appropriate route depending on where you live, (i.e., visit your GP, call NHS111).  Even if you feel well, return of the product is essential so that it can be disposed of in a way that does not contaminate the environment and put others at risk. Do not dispose of this product in household waste or flush the capsules down toilets.

Orgenism is recalling the above product. Amazon and Orgenism sales of this product have stopped. A point of sale notice will be displayed on Orgenism website.
