Kantstraße 101,

Reason for the report:PathogenFurther information:

In “Super Fruta – Enoki Mushroom”, Listeria monocytogenes was quantitatively detected.

In the present sample “Super Fruta – Enoki Mushroom”, the safety notice is only applied in English to the packaging “MUST BE COOKED BEFORE CONSUMPTION” without any indication of the obligatory temperature and duration of heating, and consequently the consumer is not informed with certainty that the Enoki mushrooms must undergo a further treatment before consumption, which leads to the safe killing of L. monocytogenes (Art. 14 para. 3 lit. a of Regulation (EC) No. 178/2002), there is a health risk, in particular, but not exclusively, for consumers with particular health sensitivities (e.g. children, the elderly and/or immunosuppressed persons) (Art. 14 para. 4 Reg. (EC) No. 178/2002).Possible consequences:

Listeria usually manifests itself within 14 days of infection with diarrhea and fever. In particular, pregnant women, seniors and people with a weakened immune system can develop more severe courses of the disease with blood poisoning and meningitis. In pregnant women, even without symptoms, the unborn child can be harmed.
People who have eaten this food and develop severe or persistent symptoms should seek medical help and point out a possible Listeria infection.
Pregnant women who have eaten this food should seek medical treatment and advice even without symptoms. For other people without symptoms, this does not make sense.

Frozen yoghurt sample detected with coliform bacteria and total bacterial counts exceeding legal limits

Hong Kong, 15/07/2025

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department announced today (July 15) that a sample of frozen yoghurt was found to contain coliform bacteria and total bacterial counts exceeding the legal limits. The CFS is following up on the incident.

A spokesman for the CFS said, “The CFS collected the above-mentioned sample from a retail shop with a frozen confection factory licence in Kowloon City for testing under its routine Food Surveillance Programme. The test result showed that the sample contained 120 coliform bacteria per gram and 220,000 bacteria per gram, both exceeding the legal limits.

“The CFS conducted an investigation of the premises immediately, took food samples for laboratory testing, and informed the food premises concerned of the irregularity. The investigation revealed that the frozen yoghurt was produced in the premises concerned. The premises has already stopped selling the frozen yoghurt, and discarded the affected product according to the CFS’s advice. The CFS has also provided health education on food safety and hygiene to the person-in-charge and staff of the premsises, and requested the staff to carry out a thorough cleaning and disinfection,” the spokesman said.

Under the Frozen Confections Regulation (Cap. 132AC), frozen confection for sale should not contain more than 100 coliform bacteria per gram or more than 50,000 bacteria per gram. The maximum penalty for offenders is a fine of $10,000 and three months’ imprisonment upon conviction. The fact that the coliform count and the total bacterial count exceeded the legal limit indicated that the hygienic conditions were unsatisfactory, but did not mean that consumption would lead to food poisoning.

The CFS will continue to follow up on the incident and take appropriate action to safeguard food safety and public health. An investigation is ongoing.

EVISCERATE DRY SALTED VOBLA ARAL SILVER

Company Announcement

KRASNIY OKTYABR INC. USA. of BROOKLYN, NY, is recalling its “ARAL SILVER VOBLA” brand “ARAL”, because the product was found to be uneviscerated.

The fish were distributed nationwide through retail stores. The product comes in a clear plastic vacuum packaged bag with a blue label, containing two whole fish inside marked “Product of Kazakhstan”.

The recall was initiated after routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets food inspectors and subsequent analysis by NYS Food Laboratory revealed the product was not properly eviscerated prior to processing.

The sale of uneviscerated fish is prohibited because clostridium botulinum spores are more likely to be concentrated in the viscera than any other portion of the fish. Uneviscerated fish have been linked to outbreaks of botulism poisoning. Symptoms of botulism include dizziness, blurred or double vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing. Difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation may also be common symptoms. People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention.

No illness has been reported to date in connection with this problem.

Consumers who have purchased packages ‘DRY SALTED VOBLA ARAL SILVER’ are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 718-858-6720.
