16 villagers suffer food poisoning

Officials from the Ministry of Industry and Handicraft are investigating the production of rice wine in Mondolkiri province’s Keo Sima district after 16 people contracted food poisoning over the weekend.

A Keo Sima district police official said yesterday that all 16 villagers have recovered and officials are investigating the cause of the mass illness.

“We don’t exactly know yet how they got sick because they did not all eat together, they all ate at their own homes,” he said. “There was also no ceremony or event that they all joined, but they all got sick at the same time.”

He said that officials from the ministry’s provincial department took samples of rice wine being sold at a local store to do tests.
