India – Kohima – 100 Sick – Suspected Food Poisoning

More than hundred persons were admitted in different hospitals of Kohima on September 1 and 2 as they became ill from suspected food poisoning at Kohima during a school farewell programme on September 1.
The admitted patients included students, parents, teachers and others who had consumed custard reportedly prepared by the students during farewell programme for class 12 in that institution. Doctor from Oking hospital Kohima informed that on September 1, initially around four or five persons were admitted, however, towards the evening more persons came with same problem. Doctor said around 60 persons admitted at Oking were recovering and two persons kept under Intensive Care Unit. One person has already been discharged from the hospital on request. On query of the symptoms, doctor said the patients had high fever, severe abdomen pain and dehydration. Oking hospital has deputed 8 doctors even on Sunday to care for the admitted patients.
According to sources, many persons were also admitted at Naga hospital, KOHIMAS hospital and some at Bethel hospital. This correspondent spoke to Food Safety Officer, CMO Kohima, Kezhangulie Yimchunger, where he was informed that the office had not received any official information or complaint about food poisoning and learnt only from local daily on September 3. He said since it happened on September 1 the chances of getting raw material for laboratory test was less, however, he would visit the particular school on September 4.
