At least 11 people in nine states have been infected in a salmonella outbreak linked to pistachios, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Wednesday.
Two of the people sickened were hospitalized, the CDC said.
Pistachios with the brand names of Paramount Farms, Trader Joe’s and Wonderful have been recalled by the grower due to the risk of salmonella contamination. Wonderful Pistachios said the products have a 13-digit lot code. The numbers are available on the company’s website through a link in a news release about the recall.
“Wonderful Pistachios takes food safety matters very seriously and is working closely with health officials to identify the source of the problem,” the company said.
People began getting ill on December 12, the CDC said. They range in age from 9 to 69.
In a press release, the company said this is the first time in 30 years one of its products has needed to be recalled.
The CDC says this strain of salmonella causes symptoms 12 to 72 hours after eating the tainted food and recommends all pistachios from these brands be returned.
The Wonderful Co. is recalling its pistachios packaged under the brands Wonderful, Paramount Farms and Trader Joe’s that were distributed nationwide in the U.S. and Canada because they have been linked to a salmonella outbreak that stretches from the Pacific to Atlantic.
The Wednesday recall marks the fourth pistachio recall this year because of Salmonella concerns.
