Inventure Foods, Inc. has issued a voluntary recall of certain varieties of its Fresh Frozen™ line of frozen vegetables as well as select varieties of its Jamba “At Home” line of smoothie kits due to finding of Listeria monocytogenes, in its Jefferson, GA facility. Listeria is an organism that can cause infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

These recalled products did not test positive for Listeria monocytogenes, and there are no known illnesses linked to consumption of Fresh Frozen IQF frozen vegetables or Jamba “At Home” smoothies to date. However, Inventure Foods has decided to err on the side of utmost caution and issue a voluntary recall because Listeria monocytogenes was detected in the facility during routine testing.

FH Publications/Nylabone Products is recalling one lot of its Puppy Starter Kit dog chews because they may be contaminated with Salmonella. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this product.

The recalled Puppy Starter Kit comes in a 1.69 ounce package. They were distributed nationwide, to Canada, and through one domestic online mail order facility. The product has Lot number 21935, the UPC number 0-18214-81291-3, and expiration date of 3/22/18 on the back of the package.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams is voluntarily recalling all ice cream, frozen yogurt, sorbet, and ice cream sandwiches in all flavors and containers because of possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The company is stopping sales and closing scoop shops until all products are safe.

The products were distributed in the U.S. to retail outlets, including food service accounts and grocery markets, and online. The recall includes all products with the “Jeni’s” brand name.

Salmonella Paratyphi Outbreak

[Ventura County, CA] On April 9, 2015, the State of California Department of Public Health (CDPH) notified Ventura County Communicable Disease of a possible Salmonella paratyphi outbreak. As of today, April 20, 2015, there have been 25 confirmed cases. Eighteen of these cases reside in California. (7 reside in LA County, 4 in Orange County, 2 in Riverside County, 1 in Santa Barbara County, and 4 in Ventura County) There are 7 out-of-state cases, most of whom had travel to Southern California. Twenty percent of affected patients have been hospitalized.

At this time, investigation is still ongoing regarding the cause of the outbreak. As of April 17, 10/10 people who completed detailed food questionnaires stated they had consumed sushi, and over 80% reported having eaten raw tuna. The Ventura County Environmental Health Division will provide information to CDPH about the source of food products from any Ventura County facilities associated with this outbreak.

CACAK — Another person with salmonella poisoning is being treated at the hospital in Cacak, central Serbia, Director Dr. Radoslav Milosevic said on Wednesday.

However, the new patient, an 85-year-old man, did not come from a nursing home in the village of Vranici where five elderly persons died of this form of food poisoning during the past week.

According to Milosevic, the patient is “a neighbor” of the Dvoje nursing home

The owner of a British seaside hotel has apologised after nearly 100 holidaymakers were struck down by what health officials have described as a norovirus outbreak.

Almost everyone who has visited the Cooden Beach Hotel in the last two weeks has come down with vomiting, diarrhoea and other symptoms of the highly-contagious airborne bug.

A Rother District Council spokesperson said it is believed that 100 people have been affected by the so-called ‘winter vomiting bug’ at the hotel in Eastbourne, East Sussex
