Every spring salmonella outbreaks occur and one of the causes around Easter is baby chicks.

State Veterinarian in Ohio, Dr. Tony Foshey says because a majority of birds carry salmonella naturally, it’s important to take precautions when handling baby chicks.

“I know they are cute and all of those sorts of things.” said Forshey. “However, they can carry salmonella, so we just need to make sure we keep that in mind during the Easter holiday.”

Dr. Forshey says washing your hands with soapy water after handling baby chicks is important and he recommends keeping the chicks outside and not in the house.
