Food Sell by Dates to be Scrapped?

A BBC article reports today that some ministers are calling for food manufacturers to scrap sell by dates to reduce food waste and save shoppers money. The ministers would permit ‘use by’ and ‘best before’  to allow for the manufacturers stock control and safety issues. The BRC seem to disagree and would like to see better education of the public as the solution. However the FSA are backing the proposals with the proviso that dating for safety purposes (use by) and quality purposes (best before) remain. The figures of £12 billion a year in food waste are extremely high and should be tackled in as many ways as possible.
