Shellfish Toxin and Safety Testing
For those of you interested in this area there is a new technology being developed by Queens University, Belfast. The new technology may be available in about a year’s time and will provide test methodology which will cover a wide range of Shellfish toxins.
The technology will be much quicker giving results in minutes rather than days.
Another advantage to some users, not necessarily testing laboratories, is that the technology will be developed for use without the need for a testing laboratory.
It has other benefits in that it could replace the animal testing and HPLC methods the former of which would be of great interest.
Costing, as always, is close to all our hearts however this product which will be marketed by Neogen Europe has not had any detailed costing undertaken published. This product is not intended for use in testing laboratories, the kit will have to be competitively priced and easy to use.
It could have the potential to be used as a positive release tool screening for toxins at source on the fishing boats.
The technology basically involves ‘toxin detector proteins’ and dipstick colour change indicators.
